I Hope this is on the right track will chat tomorrow, spewing i missed the last chat will play around it. Tara
Integrating Math into ICT
Students will learn how to understand the differences between distances and measurements and identify distances as smaller or larger. To understand travelling into space and how the distance travelled may be affected by the speed you travel. Using the internet to explore for answers relating to a topic ie the measurement of a light year. We will use the internet to check out sites like Starchild and explore the measurement of a light year and compare it to Kilometres. Students will also learn how to use Excel to create a variety of graphs to display the outcomes of their brainstorming activities which we used an interactive whiteboard. We will research this topic by comparing space travel with local modes of transport used by their parents allowing students to use prior knowledge of events and objects drawing from the world around them. Exploring and identifying modes of transport used by parents to get to work, and identifying other modes of transport used for work.
With the use of an interactive smarboard students can creatively explore and record the information they are providing as a group and use this information without having to take the time handwriting and then typing it into the spreadsheet which they can easily do with less time copying the data straight to excel. Students will collaboratively work to brainstorm on both these areas of transport by collecting data and creating graphs in spreadsheets through Microsoft Excel. Microsoft excel is a great program that can be used to teach students how to create a variety of graphs and it also helps to develop literacy skills by inputting data into the spreadsheet. As we are continuing on from the lesson about Space travel and Rockets in our Science lesson number one we will also be linking to this by exploring distance and how far students think it is to travel into space compared to their parents travelling to work using words like further than shorter than etc. We will explore the mathematical terms for measurement metres, Kilometres and light years to understand how we travel and fast or slow will affect how long it can take to arrive to our destination. As we are exploring "what do we have in our solar system?" it is appropriate to help students understand how big our solar system is and how far it is. By exploring distances and comparing these with everyday opportunities students can further develop their understanding of distance an travel and by integrating ICT into their learning they are gaining an opportunity to use the internet and programs like microsoft excel to explore and investigate "What is in our solar system?".
